At a routine ultrasound, Eric and Ruth Brown learned their third child, Pearl Joy, had lobar holoprosencephaly. Babies with HPE are severely underdeveloped and usually do not survive to be born full term, and if they do, they typically succumb within hours or days of birth. The Browns decided, against advice, to deliver Pearl. They arranged for hospice care to provide her comfort until she passed away, should she survive birth. They also prepared her funeral. Pearl Joy Brown has since reached her 2nd birthday. The Browns have celebrated more than 100 consecutive “Cupcake Fridays”, a weekly celebration of Pearl Joy’s tender life. Pearl Joy needs constant medical care, suffers seizures, but she no longer needs oxygen. Eric and Ruth Brown call her a miracle.
